Conference on Poultry nutrition and the balance of gut flora in Vienna on 11 October, 2012

In the frames of CEPO – Centre of Excellence for Poultry project a big event is organized each year, where current research topics as well as results achieved in the project are presented. Acknowledged representatives of the profession are also invited to give lectures regarding various topics of interest to professional target groups regarding poultry nutrition and poultry health. 2011 conference was organized on 11 October in Vienna.

The event served a double purpose. On the one hand we intended to introduce all the major results achieved since the start-up of the project as well as our current fields of activities. On the other hand, by involving external lecturers representing prestigious institutes, we wished to provide opportunity for an overview and discussion of current considerations of professional topics that are linked to the project priorities and might attract extensive interest.

The conference consisted of two major parts accordingly. During the morning session the first presentation was given by the Head of the GMO Unit of European Food Safety Authority regarding the risk assessment of genetically modified feed components. Themes of the following presentations included the importance of mycotoxins for poultry, the connection between nutrition and the immune system and its practical consequences, the specialities of the digestive physiology of chicken, and pathogens influencing the gut flora. Each of these topics was presented by internationally recognized professionals of the field. Our lecturers represented the German Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, the University of Natural resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, (BOKU), the Freie Universität Berlin and Vetmeduni Vienna. 
In the afternoon session, current research activities of CEPO project were introduced by the project participants. Two presentations were made about Campylobacter jejuni, a pathogen that causes a great part of human diseases. A further lecture concerned Riemerella anatipestifer that occurs in geese. One of our colleagues talked about the potential use of antimicrobial bacteria in preventing poultry diseases, and the study focusing on creating a reliable database to be used in poultry diagnostics was also introduced in detail. 
In both sections, the audience had the possibility to raise questions after each presentation, which led to a dialogue with the lecturers.
After the conference, the teams of the two project partners played an exciting and cheerful football match, whose supporters included participants and lecturers of the conference. The match was lost by the Austrian team despite an intensive training programme…
About 100 participants – including a great number of Hungarian poultry producers - took part at the event. A special booklet containing the abstracts of the lectures as well as the profiles of the lecturers was edited on occasion of the conference. The publication was distributed on site among the participants of the event.
